The class is called “the Graphic Novel,” but really, its a class about comic books. From badly drawn comic strips to beautiful, full-length books, from American superheroes to Japanese manga, from horror to memoir, the class covers all the possible methods of sequential art that you could possibly think of. More an art-analysis class than a literary-analysis one, the Graphic Novel course is a great way for English majors to get out of their textual bubbles and for non-majors to get into an upper-level English without having to read a dense novel or confusing poem.
The texts this course covers are numerous, but some you might recognize are:
- Sandman
- Watchmen
- Lone Wolf and Cub
- Persepolis
- The Dark Knight Returns
Think those sound cool? Just wait until you read the stuff you’ve probably never heard of. Some of the comics you’ll study in this class will stick with you for the rest of your life.
